Local Sites of Interest

During the Great Depression, the US government commissioned artists to paint murals in public spaces so people could have beautiful artwork to view. Completed in 1939, the Black River Canal mural, located in the Boonville post office, was painted by 22 year old twins, Lucerne and Suzanne McCullough.  They were inspired by Walter D. Edmonds novel, “Rome Haul”.

Founded in 1885, it has been a cornerstone of the community.

Built in 1875 as a home, the Community Center provides area residents with the opportunity to enjoy locally produced high quality cultural programs. 

Said to have been the most famous hotel between the Erie Canal and the St. Lawrence. Stagecoaches would stop here to change horses and their passengers would often eat and sleep at the inn that was constructed in 1812. 

Located along the Black River Canal, the  50-foot waterfalls is close to the picnic area.  This picturesque park also features steep, wooded hills and a mountain stream.  A nature trail meanders through the forest and past Pixley Falls. 

Park at the Boonville Search and Rescue or six miles south on Rt 46 at Pixley Falls State Park or about one mile further south at Trails End parking lot. 

The Five Combines (five locks in a row which are locks 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43) are located a short distance from the Trails End parking lot. Other locks can be observed along the trail. 

An active park that boasts basketball and tennis courts, splash pad, a large sports field and picnic pavilions. It hosts numerous family gatherings, the Farmers Market in the summer along with the Village Band Concerts.  Located across Rt 12 from the Canal Museum.

At the north end of Erwin Park is a 70’ single span covered bridge that  crosses the Black River Feeder Canal and connects the towpath with Erwin Park.

Constructed in 2005, it features hand carved signs on each end of the bridge. 

Three miles north of Boonville on Rt 12 in between the north and south bound lanes.  These are locks 87, 88, 89, and 90.

This 4800 mile trail that stretches from North Dakota to Vermont includes the Black River Canal towpath from Rome to Boonville. It then travels on the Black River Feeder Canal towpath to Forestport before meandering through the Adirondacks. 

Bike, hike, walk or jog on the same towpath draft animals used while pulling canal boats well over a century ago.  Kayak or canoe on the canal. The Feeder Canal is ten miles in length from Boonville to Forestport, it twists and turns to accommodate the terrain.
